Welcome to RefractSurvey

RefractSurvey is a survey engine for game dev teams. Think of it as a friendly, self-hosted way to collect feedback from playtesters and friends, built specifically for helping you make the best game possible.

This guide walks through everything RefractSurvey can do, organized by what you're trying to accomplish rather than how it's built.

Get set up

  • Brochure — features and how they will be useful for you
  • Cost Breakdown — what it costs
  • Buy it! — go buy it at itch.io
  • Getting Started — what you need, and how to get RefractSurvey up and running
  • Automated Server Setup — turning a bare Linux computer (even a small one) into a ready-to-go RefractSurvey server
  • Upgrading — moving an existing install to a newer version, files and database both
  • License — license agreement when you buy it

The basics

  • Projects — keeping separate games or teams cleanly apart from each other
  • Surveys — a collection of questions
  • Groups — for putting related questions together
  • Questions — the meat of your survey
  • Question Types — for asking all kinds of different questions
  • Markdown Formatting — a little bit of styling for your question text and long answers
  • Responses — how a survey taker answered the questions
  • Codes — one-time codes for giving access to a survey

Getting work done

  • Media Library — some surveys have images, the media library helps you keep track of them
  • Analytics — every scale and choice question, charted automatically as answers come in
  • Templates — build a survey once, reuse its shape forever
  • Backups — taking your data out (or bringing it in) as a backup file
