== Creating a survey ==

From a project's Surveys page, click '''New Survey'''. You can start completely from scratch, or pre-load all the groups and questions from a saved [[RefractSurvey_Templates|template]] — handy if you run the same kind of survey (like a Steam playtest feedback form) over and over.

== Draft, Active, and Closed ==

A survey moves through three statuses:

* '''Draft''' — still being built. You can freely add, edit, and reorder groups and questions.
* '''Active''' — published and taking responses. Once a survey is active, its questions are locked so that a respondent partway through doesn't end up answering a form that's changed underneath them.
* '''Closed''' — no longer accepting responses, but everything already collected stays put. You can reopen a closed survey later if you want to collect more.

If you publish a survey before generating any access codes, RefractSurvey notices and takes you straight to the Codes page with a reminder, rather than leaving you on the builder with a published survey nobody can actually take.

== Previewing before you publish ==

Any survey can be interactively clicked through exactly as a respondent would see it, without it counting as a real response — see the Preview button on the survey's builder page. This is the best way to sanity-check pagination, required questions, and formatting before you publish.

== Finishing touches ==

A survey can have its own custom '''thank-you message''', shown after a respondent finishes. Edit it from the survey's details page.

== Deleting a survey ==

Deleting a real survey is permanent (unlike [[RefractSurvey_Templates|templates]], which are only ever soft-deleted). If you might want the data later, consider closing it instead, or exporting a [[RefractSurvey_Backups|backup]] first.
