== Building a question ==

From a survey's builder page, add a question to any group and choose its type, its text, and whether it's required. [[RefractSurvey_Markdown_Formatting|Markdown]] is supported in question text, so you can bold, italicize, or list your way to clearer instructions.

== Reordering questions ==

Questions within a group can be dragged into a new order right in the builder — a dashed placeholder shows where the question came from, and a thin line shows where it'll land, so it's always clear what's about to happen. A newly added question is immediately draggable, with no need to reload the page first.

== Required vs. optional ==

Any question can be marked required or optional. A respondent can't finish a group with an unanswered required question — if they try, they're taken back to the first one they missed.

== Single and multiple choice answer options ==

For single-choice and multiple-choice questions:

* Each answer option can carry its own optional description, shown to respondents right next to the option's label (for example, a genre option like "Roguelike" might carry the description "Runs end in permanent death, but each run unlocks something new"). This never shows up in results or analytics — only the plain option label does.
* Answer options can be dragged into a new order in the question builder, the same way groups and questions can.

== Description and image blocks ==

Not every question needs to collect an answer. Two special block types exist purely to add context:

* A '''description''' block shows some text (with markdown formatting) and nothing else — useful for instructions or a section intro.
* An '''image''' block shows a picture from your project's [[RefractSurvey_Media_Library|Media Library]], with an optional caption.

Neither type is included when viewing or exporting responses, since there's no answer to collect.
